The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) is the professional, educational and trade union body for 68,000 chartered physiotherapists, physiotherapy students and physiotherapy support workers across the UK. Spinal Muscular Atrophy UK work tirelessly to raise awareness of SMA and are the leading advocate for individuals and families ensuring timely access to diagnosis, effective treatment and best management of care for all affected by SMA. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a very rare, debilitating, and incurable genetic neuromuscular condition, affecting approximately 1 in 10,000 newborns, or 80 babies each year in the UK. It is estimated that there are 1,350 people in the UK currently living with SMA. Around 1 in 40 of the population are, usually unknowingly, carriers of the faulty gene which causes SMA. Through our Outreach Service, we offer support to families and help them negotiate the complex and challenging world of health and disability services. We are driven to ensure that everyone affected by SMA will have access to the best care, support and treatment and there will be no barriers preventing full inclusion in society.
